I've played over 200 shmups and plenty of those have been indie, Rheum is a wonderful experience for the price point. The game is oozing with love, you can tell the developer enjoys creating games. It's hard to quantify all the intangibles that produce that feeling, but it hits you from the very beginning. It's creative and different in all the right ways. The scoring is deceptively deep like all good shmups, point blank kills, grazing bullets, leaving your power up meter full and collecting the little yellow goop while not shooting all reward extra points.
