Debt has almost no real consequences, and it breaks the entire economic challenge I really enjoy the idea behind Democracy 4, but after playing a very difficult Somalia campaign I discovered something that made the economic side of the game almost meaningless for me. I started with an enormous national debt and initially treated it as a serious problem. I spent multiple terms trying to manage the economy responsibly. I introduced new taxes, expanded the tax base, improved GDP, technology and productivity, reduced poverty and unemployment, and carefully balanced government spending. Eventually I managed to get the primary budget almost perfectly balanced. Government revenue was around 13...
